Film Production

Program Introduction

As an integrated program based on the North American film industry standard, Film Production provides  five directions of study, including Production, Directing, Cinematography, Production Design and Post Production. The teaching process imitates film studio and on set system, and the course is taught by senior instructors from North America with rich industry experience, including some industry leaders who have won international awards such as Oscar and Emmy. Over the course of one year, students will participate in production of no less than 20 short films and serials, more than 4 of which as key roles. This program is of high intensity, high density and high practicality.

Specializations

In the first 6 months, students focus on learning the 5 key creative roles in filmmaking: producing, directing, cinematography, production design, and post-production/editing. In the last six months, students can choose two specializations to earn credits on a minimum of two adva

Producing

The producer is generally the only person who’s with the film from beginning to end. The producer must find the material and develop the script, secure the financing, hire the director and other key crew, manage the production process, and then secure sales and manage the publicity, distribution and profit-sharing process.

Directing

The director is the visionary leader of the production team because without a strong vision behind a story, a film will lose its focus. A film director needs understand how each department contributes to the making of a film and how to best utilize the talents of all team members.

Cinematography

Camera is the eye of a film, but also the core of film and television production. The cinematographer makes sure to capture the best frame in the shooting process. From lighting the whole scene to composing the picture, the complex skills required by a contemporary film team are revealed all the time.

Production Design

Production designer is the architect of the film world. Almost all the scenes in Hollywood is designed by different production designers. The authenticity of the scene determines the quality and visual experience of the film.

Post Production

The post-production editor is the wizard of the filmmaking process. Their knowledge of storytelling, editing, visual effects, sound, and other disciplines enables them to transform a series of shots into a film that entertains audiences.

  • Term 01

    Explore the possibilities of storytelling, and acquire the narrative techniques and visual skills necessary to present a story on screen through a comprehensive study of the five directions of production, directing, photography, Production Design and Post Production.

  • Term 02

    Learn and practice more filmmaking skills by on set practice and working with screenwriters.

  • Term 03

    Introduce cutting-edge technologies like green screen and visual effects. Learn to use emerging technologies to solve the challenges in the film creation process creatively.

  • Term 04

    Choose two directions from the five disciplines to specialize, and prepare yourself to be a professional film talent with overall understanding of the industry but also specialized expertise.

  • Term 05

    Devote a lot of time and energy to the preparation and shooting of final project. Do your best to make short films together with the team to serve as the foundation of your professional portfolio.

  • Term 06

    Complete the production of the final project and focus on career preparation or further study.

Career Orientation

  • Producer

    The producer is the leader of a film, whose job is to really land the film from finding the right script to forming a team, till negotiating for greater profits for the crew.

  • Cinematographer

    Cinematography is not only the eye of a film & television work, but also the core of production. The cinematographer ensures the best picture to be captured during the shooting process. From lighting the whole scene to debugging the picture, the complex skills needed by a contemporary film team are revealed all the time.

  • Production Designer

    The production designer is the "architect" who builds the whole film world. Most of the scenes in Hollywood movies come from designed scenes rather than real scenes. The true extent of scene design not only determines the visual feeling of a film, but also fully reflects the production quality of the film.

  • Post Producer

    Post production is a magic link in the process of film production. Because of their knowledge of storytelling, editing, visual effects, sound and other fields, they are able to piece together a series of shots into a movie.

  • Director

    The director is the narrator of the story and the soul of the production team. They analyze the script from different angles, interpret each scene and dialogue, and turn it into reality through their own imagination. The director needs to communicate with the actors, direct the performance, and communicate with all the creators in the crew. Therefore, if you want to be a good director, you should be proficient in other aspects of exam-oriented production.

To study in SHVFS for one year and participate in the production of different types of films will offer you more practical experience than four years of traditional university study. 考特尼 • 弗雷

影视化妆设计系主任

2003年,考特尼•弗雷在MAC化妆品公司从事零售工作时,她的化妆事业由此起航。三年后,带着浓厚的求学欲,考特尼决定拓展自己的知识面,因而在温哥华电影学院参加了密集型高强度的化妆课程。

2006年毕业后,考特尼便为电影、电视、时尚、出版社等各式媒体提供化妆服务。她的能力及对工作的热忱使得考特尼一年到头都十分忙碌。她期待每一个全新的项目,并且珍惜每一次从事她所热爱事业的机会。

考特尼最近的一些作品包括:协助电影《雷蒙•斯尼奇的不幸历险》、电视剧《地球百子》、《路西法》以及电影《速游记》的化妆工作,她还担任过电影《任务》和《车库销售之谜》的首席设计师。

Educational system: One year, six 8-week terms

Tuition fee: ¥178,000 (Scholarships may be available to applicants.)

About 40 hours of curriculum and mentoring per week.

About 60 hours of total work per week.

During one year at SHVFS students will crew on over 25 films.

Application materials:

A. A copy of your ID (Proof that you are at least 18 years of age or have graduated from high school.)

B. A copy of your highest degree (If you are still studying, please provide your Confirmation Letter.)

C. One recommendation letter (optional, remarks: Please note family members are not eligible as references).

D. One recommendation letter (optional, remarks: Please note family members are not eligible as references).

E. A file certifying your English proficiency level, such as TOEFL or IELTS score sheet, CET score sheet, Transcripts from any secondary or post-secondary institutions attended in the last 3 years, etc.

F. Film Production Program Requirements:

     1)Write a synopsis of a film project that you are passionate about making (500-1000words). Provide the film genre and utilize references to other movies to explain how you would make the film. Explain the concept, vision or idea.

     2)If you have made a film before, please submit a copy or a link to the film online. Ensure that you specify your involvement in the film, as well as any screenings or awards (optional).
